Pier 14

Black And White Photography, Photography, Stacy
Sunrise Pier 14 and Oakland Bay Bridge San Francisco

Last fall took me to San Francisco (lucky me!). Getting up at the crack of dawn to make my way to Pier 33 and my trip to Alcatraz, I was rewarded with catching the sunrise through the archway to Pier 14, and as luck would have it, a lone silhouetted gentleman. The early bird and all that, you know … This photo (in color) is framed and hanging on my wall in my new apartment. It makes me smile every time I look at it.

    1. Aw, thanks, Patti. I was surprised when I went back looking for photos to post that I had not tried this one in black and white, but I really did love the muted colors. It’s always fun when you find something that works well in both 🙂

As for my printing, no, I don’t. I found a wonderful photography shop in my old neighborhood and they worked with me in printing my images. Turns out it’s much more difficult to print black and white images than color. I printed a number of different B&Ws over the course of a few weeks, and each batch was a slightly different tone. In the end, they learned what I liked and had me resubmit all of the photos to be printed in one run so that they would all “match.” Great people. That being said, I’ve heard of a great shop in California (Bay Photo) that I might try for comparison.

      1. That’s great to know you’re getting such good service and I agree with you about the B&W being on the tricky side of getting it just right, particularly having become so familiar with a screen version. Keep up the great work Stacy!

    1. Thanks for looking at both, David. I do agree that the muted colors of the other tend to make the eye wander more quickly. There’s just something about them that I do like, though. Usually I don’t have too much difficulty choosing whether B&W or color works better, so I appreciate your take on which one you prefer and why!
